Nog een gehaakte ketting / Another crocheted necklace

Ik haakte nog een Lia Govers-ketting, de Folded lace necklace.
Deze keer volgde ik het patroon en de ketting is goed gelukt.

Ik gebruikte Lammy Coton Crochet 10 (100% katoen) en een 2mm haaknaald.

Gehaakte ketting / Crocheted necklace

I have not been able to finish my summer scarf, because I did not have the chance to buy new yarn.
I had hoped that I could finish the scarf with the yarn I had (4 balls), but I think I have made the scarf too wide. So I need 1 ball yarn extra for the finishing touch.
In the meantime I came across some crochet necklace designs by Lia Govers on Ravelry.
I really like them.

I started with Lia’s Crochet-texture necklace, a free pattern on Ravelry. I found the instructions on how to assemble the necklace not so easy to follow, so I decided to try my own design.
This turned out not so well as I hoped and you can see.
So I decided to add some buttons, to hide the irregularities.

I found some ‘vintage’ buttons from my mother-in-law’s sewing box. I wasn’t sure I liked them.
(There were 14, while on the package it was said there should be 15. my mother-in-law must have used one.)
They are 18mm ø and costed 18 francs. My mother-in-law must have bought them in Belgium where she has a log cabin since 1978.

I laid the buttons on the necklace and I noticed that they were a bit translucent. That I liked.
Sewing buttons is not my favorite pastime, but I succeeded in sewing on eleven.

Iers haakwerk / Irish crochet

Op de weblog At-Swim-Two-Birds van de Antwerpse textielkunstenares Renilde de Peuter had ik eens een stukje Iers haakwerk gezien dat mij zeer intrigeerde. Ik probeerde door goed te kijken te zien hoe het gehaakt was, maar ik kreeg er geen idee van.
Gisteren kwam ik er weer terecht en zag toen dat Renilde een patroon van dit haakwerkje erbij had gezet. Dat was me eerder niet opgevallen.
Ik kon het niet nalaten het patroon te vertalen (een manier om het te doorgronden) en uit te proberen. Inderdaad: ‘it is looking more complicated than it is’, zoals Renilde al aangeeft.

(Wel bleek het patroon meer indicatief dan precies en staat er in elk geval één fout in: daar waar Renilde zegt dat je stokjes moet haken, moet je halve stokjes haken.)

Eigenlijk is het resultaat zoals het hier (en op Renilde’s weblog) is weergegeven een beetje nep. Doordat het haakwerk niet geblockt is blijven de boogjes van lossen grillige vormen aannemen, wat nu juist de aantrekkelijkheid van het haakwerk is. Als je het haakwerk zou opspannen, nat maken en laten drogen zal het er heel anders uitzien en zal je de (net)structuur makkelijk kunnen herkennen.
Ik heb op internet Iers haakwerk bekeken, maar niks gezien wat hier op lijkt.
Garen: Nova 100% gemerceriseerd katoen (Wibra). Haaknaald: 2mm.

On weblog At Swim Two Birds by Antwerp textile artist Renilde de Peuter I once noticed a piece of crochet that intrigued me very much. By closely examining the piece I tried to see how it was made, but I got no clue.
Yesterday I saw it once more and then I noticed that Renilde had added a pattern.
I could non resist translating and try the pattern. ‘It is looking more complicated than it is,’ writes Renilde. And she is right.
(The pattern is actually more indicative than precise and there is at least one mistake: there where Renilde writes to crochet dc’s, it should be hdc’s.)
In fact the result shown here (and on Renilde’s weblog) is a bit fake. The piece is not blocked and therefor the chains look whimsical, which is part of the charm of this piece. If you should block it it will look different and you will be able to recognize the structure easily.
I looked around on the internet but I have not seen Irish crochet that looks like this.
Yarn: Nova 100% mercerized cotton (Wibra). Hook: 2mm.

Tafelloper? / Table runner?

Vanmorgen was ik even op de Zomermarkt bij de Hillegondakerk in Hillegersberg (Rotterdam).
Mijn oog viel meteen op een haakwerk dat opgehangen was tussen twee kraampjes.
‘Wat is het?’
‘Een tafelloper,’ zeiden meerdere mensen achter het kraampje. Voor 5 euro mocht ik het meenemen.
Maar is het wel een tafelloper? Ik zou een tafelloper op een andere manier maken.
Het geheel bevat twee stukken haakwerk die elk opgebouwd zijn uit 3 bij 10 bloemmotieven, met een brede rand eromheen. De twee stukken haakwerk zijn niet even groot: de een is 90cm lang, de ander 83 cm. Ik vermoed dat dat komt doordat ze met haaknaalden van verschillende grootte zijn gehaakt.
Vervolgens zijn er stroken witte katoenen stof omheen genaaid met de naaimachine. Dat is een beetje onhandig gedaan, waardoor het geheel niet helemaal recht is en hobbelt en bobbelt, zal ik maar zeggen.
Wat zal ik ermee doen?
This morning I visited the Summer Market near the Hillegonda Church in Hillegersberg (Rotterdam).
As I entered my eye fell on a piece of crochet hanging between two booths.
‘What is it?’
‘A table runner,’ several people behind the booths said. For 5 euro’s it was mine.
But is it a table runner for sure? I would make a table runner in a different way.
The piece consists of two parts of crochet that are build up by 3 times 10 flower motifs, with a broad edge around it. The two parts of crochet do not have the same size: one is 90 cm long, the other 83 cm. I presume that they were crocheted with hooks of different size.
Then strips of cotton fabric were added with a sewing machine. It was done in a bit of a clumsy way, so the resulting piece is not quite straight and wobbles.
What shall I do with it?

In de maak: zomersjaal / Work in progress: summer scarf

Hoewel ik graag aan mijn gekleurde cirkelsdeken zou werken, geef ik nu toch voorrang aan een zomersjaal. Die kan ik goed gebruiken. Ik had een (niet gehaakte) sjaal in dezelfde kleur, maar die liet ik per ongeluk in een winkelwagentje achter.
Ik was op zoek naar een filetontwerp, maar kon niet besluiten wat ik zou kiezen. Elisabeth Andrée toonde op haar website about crochet een filetsjaal gebaseerd op een Japans patroon. Die ziet er leuk uit: een filetsjaal met een variatie, zou je kunnen zeggen. Afwisselend om te haken.
Garen: Cotone van Lana Grossa, kleur 09. Haaknaald: 4mm.

Although I would like to work on my colored circles blanket I decided to make a summer scarf because I can use one. I had a (not crocheted) scarf in the same color, but I left it by accident in a shopping cart.
I was looking for a filet scarf, but I could not decide what to choose. Elisabeth Andrée showed on her website about crochet a filetscarf based on a Japanese pattern. It looks really nice: filet with a variation. Keeps you interested while crocheting.

Proeflapjes / Knitting swatches

Vorige zomer wilde ik beter leren breien.
Ik was onder de indruk van het werk van Mary Walker Phillips (1923-2007) en had haar boek Kreatief Breien aangeschaft.
Het boek bevat geen patronen, maar Phillips legt uit hoe bepaalde steken die zij belangrijk vond worden gebreid.
Ik heb zeer op deze lapjes zitten zwoegen, maar werd toch bevestigd in mijn vermoeden dat breien, helaas, niet voor mij is. Een aantal steken was wel te doen, maar er zijn er ook die ik telkens weer moest opzoeken.
Daarbij komt dat ik in mijn kindertijd niet op de goede manier heb leren breien. Ik heb geprobeerd om de juiste manier van breien aan te leren, maar het lukte me niet om die manier te automatiseren. Elke keer dat ik weer begon te breien begon ik toch weer op de oude, verkeerde manier en dat had ik soms pas na enige tijd in de gaten.
Onlangs vond ik de proeflapjes terug, die ik in een plastic doosje had gepropt.
Na opspannen zien ze er zo uit.
Garen: Lino van Katia (100% linnen), kleur 9.
Breinaalden: 4mm.
Last summer I wanted to learn to knit better.
I was impressed by the work of Mary Walker Phillips (1923-2007) and had purchased her book Creative Knitting.
The book does not contain patterns, but Phillips explains how to knit stitches that she thought were important.
I put a lot of time and energy in making these swatches, but it did confirm my presumption that knitting is not for me. Some of the stitches were easy, but most of them I had to look up again and again.
Then there is the fact that I had not learned to knit in the proper way when I was young. I tried to learn a right way of knitting but I could not get the hang of it.
Recently I found these swatches, stuffed in a plastic container.
After blocking they are like this.

Babyvestje / Baby cardigan

Zaterdag was het zulk somber en koud weer dat ik van mezelf mocht doen waar ik zin in had. Haken!
Ik was blijven hangen bij een minuscuul vestje met korte mouwtjes op het weblog Lanas de Ana van Ana BC.
‘Geen patroon’, stond erbij. Ana heeft het vestje geïmproviseerd.
Zou ik dat ook kunnen? Een uitdaging.
Ik bekeek de plaatjes nauwkeurig en begon. Het vestje is gehaakt van boven naar beneden, met raglan mouwtjes. Met deze korte mouwtjes is het ook nog eens een project uit een stuk.
Ik moest het begin enkele keren uithalen en berekenen met hoeveel steken ik moest beginnen. Toen ik zag dat alles goed uitkwam, had ik het vestje in korte tijd af.
Het afhechten van de draadjes kostte meer tijd.
Helaas bleek ik geen drie dezelfde knoopjes te hebben.
Ik heb geen idee welke maat het is. En of het past.
Het lijkt zo kort. Ik checkte enkele patronen en 25cm lijkt normaal.
Nu is al mijn roze acryl op.
Gehaakt met haaknaald 4,5 mm.
Saturday was such a grey and cold day that I allowed myself to do what I liked. Crochet!
I found myself stuck at a small baby cardigan at the weblog Lanas de Ana by Ana BC.
No pattern. Ana has improvised this cardigan (and some more).
Should I be able to make this without a pattern? That was the challenge.
I studied the pictures and made a start. This cardigan is crocheted starting at the top. And with these short sleeves it is also a one-piece-project.
I had to frog the beginning several times and to calculate with how many stitches I had to start. When I saw that it came out right it took only a short time to finish the cardigan.
Sewing in the yarn ends took more time.
Unfortunately I did not happen to have three identical buttons.
I have no idea what size it is. Nor if it would fit anyway.
I finished all my pink acrylic yarn.
I used a 4.5mm hook.
